One of the key components of fantasy tabletop rpgs like D&D is encounter design. how do you know when it's a combat, social, or exploration encounter. Simple one side or another will attack the other. It doesn't matter if the game master or the players initiate the battle. One side or the other will do something that will make it clear this combat.
