The broad shape of history up to the Twentieth Century is the same, but there are some major differences which set it apart. First, humans have never existed. Everyone is an anthropomorphic animal with traits and abilities which allow for a wide range of character choices. Second, the element vrillium allows flying battleships and floating fortresses to exist. This technology was first perfected in 1906, which led to arms race and eventually the Great War between the powers of Europe. The United States stayed out of the war and watched as Europe descended into a chaos which has not yet been completely resolved. Many former soldiers now work as mercenaries employed by one of the new nations of Europe, by the air shipping lines which cross national boundaries, or by one of the pirate groups who prey on them.
