Originally some was expected to play the thief, cleric, fighter, and wizard. Later MMO's would redefine these party roles as tanks, DPS, and healer. Wizards of the Coast then tried to adopted a similar strategy for it's 4e D&D game with controllers, strikers, tanks, and leaders. The RPG community completely rebelled against this even though it kind of made sense.
