He especially wants help when it comes to combat encounters that challenge the adventuring party. During the campaign and adventures this DM is finding the encounters aren't challenging the players as much as he'd like. So we drop some game master tips on this dungeon master to help solve their D&D dilemma. Please Like, Comment, Share and Subscribe! I'd like to start off by saying that I am a big fan of your youtube channel. Your videos have helped me grow as a DM a great deal in a short time. Thank you so much for doing what you do. That said, I have a big problem in my current 5e campaign. I have a group of people who are completely new to the game with one OG veteran who has only played the very first edition of D&D. We started off with 5 players but, over time, my group of players has grown. The Problem I have nine PC's in my group, eight of which are just being introduced to the hobby. I have never managed a group of this size before. While my problems are quite numerous, the only one that is completely stumping me right now is that my players keep effortlessly blowing through every combat encounter I throw at them. For example, (they are all level 5) last session I threw a drow priestess at them who summoned a yochlol. The combat was over within a few rounds with no resources expended. By the math in the DMG, this should have been a difficult encounter. I realize that my problem in this case deals heavily with action economy, however, I am reluctant to throw too many monsters into the fray as this will severely bog down the game. My current plan for the next session is just to keep raising the stakes in combat until I finally kill one (or more) of them. To me, this doesn't seem like a very good plan, but I may be wrong. Also, I am really attached to all of my players. The group has really good chemistry and I can't bring myself to split them up (that and I really only have time enough in my schedule for one session every two weeks) Please help. Additional Details It's also worth mentioning that I have taken some extreme (possibly game breaking) steps in trying to draw my players into the hobby. Most of them have magic weapons, though I have done my best to keep the elemental damage they deal within reasonable limits, but this may be adding to my problem. I don't want to take this stuff away from them because it just feels like too much of a dick move. Also, most of the encounters up to this point have been wilderness based (they've been adventuring in the Dalelands of the FR campaign setting and are on their way to Cormyr atm). The party composition is so diverse that traps and other such things are easily circumvented. The bottom line is that I am having a rough time getting them to spend their gold on expendable resources and they are, instead, spending their gold on acquiring even more magical items... I don't know... Maybe it is time for them to face a gang of rust monsters. I just hate taking their rewards away from them. I'm drawing to the point of rambling, so I'll cut it off here. Thanks in advance for your time. Happy gaming. :)
